I’m a private primary tutor and content creator who helps children reach their goals, build self-belief and ignite a love for learning.
Read on to find out more about my background, what I do as a private primary tutor, and how I can help you and your child with their learning.
Hello, my name is Gemma, and I’m a private tutor working with primary school children in years 3-6 in-person in Wimborne, Dorset and online. I also create content for parents who want to learn how to support learning with confidence.
I’ve worked in education since 2003, when I spent two and a half years in Seoul, South Korea, teaching English as a foreign language after graduating with a BSc in Zoology from Bangor University in Wales.
Whilst dipping my toe into teaching abroad, I developed a love for it and decided to return to university and train to pursue a professional teaching career.
In 2008, I graduated from London South Bank University with a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education – Primary (PGCE) with a specialism in Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
As a newly qualified teacher, I became a class teacher at a vibrant and creative primary school in New Cross, SE London, where I worked for several years and then moved on to a fabulous, nurturing school in nearby Blackheath, where children flourished and excelled. These two positions varied in many ways and provided me with a broad teaching experience.
Around 2014, I became very unwell and after an extended period when I was unable to work, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I reluctantly decided to leave the classroom and focus on regaining my health.
Thankfully, whilst not completely cured, I learned to manage my symptoms, and after a couple of years working with my creative side on a handmade business, I felt the magnetic pull of education tugging at me – but I know that being a classroom teacher would no longer work for me.
So, in 2018, Positive Primary Kids was born. I began offering private tuition to local children in Bournemouth, Dorset and soon started teaching online too – which became a necessity during the lockdowns! Soon after launching the business, I built this website and began creating content and resources with the goal of helping parents who want to make sense of primary subjects and understand how to help their children with confidence.
Fast-forward to 2023 and I have relocated to Wimborne, Dorset, which is where I grew up. I’m tutoring local children in my brand-new garden cabin and those further afield online. After a difficult couple of years, with lots of curveballs, there are lots of plans in the pipeline, including launching group tuition and a website overhaul so that I can get back to creating useful content for parents.
When I’m not teaching or writing, I can usually be found walking my dog, reading or indulging in my favourite creative hobbies – attempting to play the ukulele, knitting or sewing clothes.
I have the best job! Every week, I get to work with a fab bunch of 7 to 11-year-old kids. I draw on two decades of teaching experience to help children reach their goals. I never tire of seeing that lightbulb moment when something clicks and they finally ‘get it’💡!
Through individually tailored, accessible, multi-sensory learning activities, which often include their interests, children work towards goals whilst having fun.
My teaching style is flexible, warm, encouraging and engaging. Learning new things can be scary, so I work with children at their pace, building their confidence so that they feel safe to attempt tasks that are outside their comfort zone – this is where learning happens best!
I offer options for children to work with me in my garden classroom, both individually and in small groups, as well as individual online tuition through Zoom and interactive whiteboards. Online groups and budget-friendly digital courses are in the pipeline too.
Subjects that I teach include maths, English and 11+ exam preparation (which can include maths, English, creative writing, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, depending on the schools’ exam content). I can also work with your child on targeting specific skills, such as reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, handwriting, times tables or basic maths skills, to mention just a few.
Wearing my other hat as an educational content creator, I love creating resources and writing blog posts for parents of primary-aged children like you so that you can support learning at home with confidence.
As well as writing about educational topics, I am passionate about raising awareness of the role that wellbeing has on children’s ability to learn, making learning more accessible and increasing opportunities for the next generation.
Everyone wants their children to be happy, healthy and to experience success. For some, their journey is a smooth path paved with opportunities. For others, there can be obstacles along the way that affect their ability to learn and be content.
Here are just a few of those obstacles:

The UK’s primary schools are under immense pressure to hit performance targets, the curriculum is jam-packed and the pace of teaching is fast.
There often isn’t enough time to practise and solidify new learning before the next topic is introduced. This means that many children lose confidence because they don’t have solid foundations in core skills, have big gaps in their learning or fall through the cracks with unmet needs.
Even the children who keep up and make good progress academically often need help to stretch and challenge them.
I can give your child the individual attention that they need to support or challenge them according to their needs with my positive, tailored approach to teaching.
At Positive Primary Kids, I aim to support children, whatever their learning goals and help guide you as parents over these obstacles with accessible, fluff-free resources.
