Subjects

Maths | Years 3 - 6

From number bonds and times tables to ratios and algebra, the primary maths curriculum can cause a lot of stress if the learning moves on before the learner is ready!

Depending on their needs, I support children by:

  • filling gaps in their understanding from previous years
  • making concepts meaningful with hands-on activities
  • deepening their understanding of current school topics
  • extending their understanding beyond the scope of the curriculum

English | Years 3 - 6

English includes reading fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, handwriting, grammar, punctuation and creative writing.

It’s common for children to have strengths in some areas and weaknesses in others.

Some of the ways I support children’s English are:

  • supporting dyslexic learners with structured yet flexible multisensory approaches
  • planning creative activities linked to their interests
  • encouraging them to see themselves as readers and writers
  • identifying and filling gaps and misconceptions so that they have a stronger foundation on which to build

11 Plus Exam Prep | Years 4 - 5

Children who hope to attend grammar school after primary school sit entrance exams, commonly known as the ’11 plus’.  Competition for places can be high, so it’s important to be well prepared!

My 11 plus learners start with a thorough baseline assessment, which I use to design a bespoke programme of study for each child.

Depending on the target school, 11 plus exam subjects include:

  • maths
  • English
  • verbal reasoning
  • non-verbal reasoning

For local children aiming for Parkstone Grammar, Poole Grammar, Bournemouth School or Bournemouth School for Girls, in addition to one-to-one tutoring, I offer small group sessions and workshops throughout the year too.

Please note: grammar schools are competitive, rigorously academic places. They are not a suitable choice for all children. I have a non-pushy, stress-free approach and won’t tutor children for the 11 Plus if I feel it’s inappropriate or will affect their wellbeing.

Testimonials

We are really pleased to have found Gemma to support our 10 yr old daughter with her learning after a long period out of school through ill health - she looked forward to the sessions and enjoyed working with Gemma. We found her to be professional and empathetic; sessions were well planned and fun, and we appreciated the weekly feedback. Happy to recommend.

- Brian and Jane

I just wanted to say on behalf of all of us how grateful we are for your input with E over the last year. She has improved massively under your guidance.

- Daniel

Our daughter loves her lessons with Gemma and we have certainly noticed her progression.

- Ian

We have just received some amazing post this morning. P has passed the required standard. The overall required standard for BSG was 299 & for Parkstone was 277. P's standardised score was 309 (English 101, Maths 104, Verbal 104). P is really proud of herself and has a big smile. We all say a very big thank you for all the help & support you have given P over the past year.

- Ayleen

Gemma has been working with our 10YO ahead of her 11 plus. Our daughter struggles with holding her attention on tasks and is a little dyspraxic. This detracts from her innate intelligence when learning in a traditional sense. Gemma has devised innovative, interesting and often novel ways to engage her in learning the more difficult subject areas, and irrespective of outcome at the 11+ I'm confident that we chose the best way to maximize her potential.

- Jon

Gemma has been working with my son for nearly a year and we have found her excellent. My son really enjoys his hour with her and he is making excellent progress in his confidence and ability. I would definitely recommend her.

- Jenefer

I have had the pleasure of working previously with Gemma. She is a fantastic teacher with an incredible sense of focus and organisation. She has a good understanding of the curriculum throughout the primary age-range and can use this to adapt to the needs of the children under her tuition. It is clear how creativity as well as encouragement impacts on her teaching strategies and with this in mind, the children are inspired and motivated to learn under her guidance.

- Odette

Gemma is an incredibly creative practitioner. Her teaching is tailored to each child, and the relationships she fosters with young people allows them to progress at the highest of rates. Teaching is much more than just a job for Gemma; she derives so much joy from watching them blossom and reach their full potential

- Sophi

As a teacher Gemma is very skilled at connecting with pupils on a 1:1 basis and identifying and providing for their individual learning needs very well.
