About me

Hi there, it’s lovely to meet you!

My name is Gemma and I am a tutor for primary school children and education content creator based in Dorset.

After graduating with a Zoology degree, I wasn’t sure what to do next, but wanted to take the opportunity to work overseas. I found myself travelling to Seoul, South Korea where I taught English to children and young people and ended up staying for two and a half years.

Rather unexpectedly, I found that I loved teaching, and decided to return to university in the UK for teacher training. I graduated in 2008 with a Primary PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) and Qualified Teacher Status and loved the following years working as a classroom teacher across two very different SE London primary schools.

Around 2014, I became very unwell and after an extended period when I was unable to work, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I reluctantly decided to leave the classroom and focus on regaining my health.

Whilst not completely cured, I learned to manage my symptoms, and after a couple of years working with my creative side on a handmade business, I felt the magnetic pull of education tugging at me – but I know that being a classroom teacher would no longer work for me.

So, in 2018, Positive Primary Kids was born. I began offering private tuition to local children in Bournemouth, Dorset and soon started teaching online too – which became a necessity during the lockdowns!

Fast-forward to now, and I have relocated to Wimborne, Dorset, which is where I grew up. I work with children online, or in-person in my lovely purpose-built garden learning room, which is a stress-free, fun environment that is perfect for relaxed, hands-on learning.

When I’m not teaching or writing, I can usually be found walking my dog, reading or indulging in my favourite creative hobbies – attempting to play the ukulele, knitting or sewing clothes.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe whole-heartedly in meeting children where they are, rather than where they are ‘expected’ to be according to their age.

My teaching style is flexible, nurturing, encouraging, engaging and all too often a bit silly! Learning new things can be scary, so I work with children at their pace, building their confidence so that they feel safe to attempt tasks that are just outside their comfort zone – this is where learning happens!

I support children through individually tailored, accessible, multi-sensory learning activities, which often include their interests, so that they can make progress whilst having fun.

I never tire of seeing that lightbulb moment when something clicks and they finally ‘get it’!💡

Testimonials

We are really pleased to have found Gemma to support our 10 yr old daughter with her learning after a long period out of school through ill health - she looked forward to the sessions and enjoyed working with Gemma. We found her to be professional and empathetic; sessions were well planned and fun, and we appreciated the weekly feedback. Happy to recommend.

- Brian and Jane

I just wanted to say on behalf of all of us how grateful we are for your input with E over the last year. She has improved massively under your guidance.

- Daniel

Our daughter loves her lessons with Gemma and we have certainly noticed her progression.

- Ian

We have just received some amazing post this morning. P has passed the required standard. The overall required standard for BSG was 299 & for Parkstone was 277. P's standardised score was 309 (English 101, Maths 104, Verbal 104). P is really proud of herself and has a big smile. We all say a very big thank you for all the help & support you have given P over the past year.

Gemma has been working with our 10YO ahead of her 11 plus. Our daughter struggles with holding her attention on tasks and is a little dyspraxic. This detracts from her innate intelligence when learning in a traditional sense. Gemma has devised innovative, interesting and often novel ways to engage her in learning the more difficult subject areas, and irrespective of outcome at the 11+ I'm confident that we chose the best way to maximize her potential.

- Jon

Gemma has been working with my son for nearly a year and we have found her excellent. My son really enjoys his hour with her and he is making excellent progress in his confidence and ability. I would definitely recommend her.

- Jenefer

I have had the pleasure of working previously with Gemma. She is a fantastic teacher with an incredible sense of focus and organisation. She has a good understanding of the curriculum throughout the primary age-range and can use this to adapt to the needs of the children under her tuition. It is clear how creativity as well as encouragement impacts on her teaching strategies and with this in mind, the children are inspired and motivated to learn under her guidance.

- Odette

Gemma is an incredibly creative practitioner. Her teaching is tailored to each child, and the relationships she fosters with young people allows them to progress at the highest of rates. Teaching is much more than just a job for Gemma; she derives so much joy from watching them blossom and reach their full potential

- Sophi

As a teacher Gemma is very skilled at connecting with pupils on a 1:1 basis and identifying and providing for their individual learning needs very well.
